Mark A. Kinney MBA, CFA®

Co-Founder & Chief Investment Officer

Investing his summer earnings in two stocks (Laidlaw and Franco Nevada) while in graduate school and watching them grow enough to buy his first new car (VW Jetta) was enough to convince Mark that the investment industry would be a rewarding and challenging career.

After completing his MBA in 1989, Mark began his career with Canada Trust where he was exposed to all facets of the investment industry and also learned that concentration in two stocks is generally not a formula for long-term success.

In 1992, by then a Chartered Financial Analyst, Mark joined Merchant Private Trust (which became Connor Clark Private Trust) as a Portfolio Manager.  He also assisted with management of the firm’s fixed income assets. He progressed quickly to Vice President and took on additional responsibilities as an equity analyst in industrial services.  It was also at Connor Clark that Mark formed a working partnership with David Lloyd and Douglas Brown, with whom he would go on to found Newport Private Wealth.

In 2001, the three colleagues brought their complementary skill sets, in investment, tax and financial planning, and estate and succession planning, and a shared vision to the start-up of Newport. “Our goal was to create a firm we would be proud to be clients of,” explains Mark, “and we began by investing our own money alongside clients.”

Mark is Chief Investment Officer and Chair of Newport’s Investment Committee.

In his spare time, Mark enjoys travel with his wife and three grown children and spending time at the family cottage. He is active in charitable endeavors including The Yellow Bus Foundation, a non-profit organization that provides funding to children’s charities, which he co-founded.
