Jordan Schwann, CFA®

President

As President, Jordan is responsible for turning Newport's direction into disciplined execution, ensuring every part of the firm is working toward the same priorities, and that the people doing that work have what they need to do it well.

A Calgary native, Jordan began his career as a corporate analyst in the energy sector before moving to PwC's consulting practice in Australia, where he managed financial risk on behalf of large institutions. That experience convinced him that individual investors stood to benefit from the same discipline used in the institutional world — a philosophy that drew him to Newport's pension-style approach to investing and its focus on risk management.

"Why should an investor accept any more risk than required to meet a given investment objective?" Jordan asks. "Most clients easily recall their recent returns, but rarely do they fully understand the risk in their portfolio." That question has guided his approach to helping clients balance risk and reward in pursuit of their goals.

It also shapes how he thinks about the firm as a whole. "Our advice is only as good as the people giving it," he says. Much of his focus is on sharpening how Newport operates while keeping client relationships front and centre. Jordan is a longstanding voting member of Newport's Investment Committee, where he helps set the firm's asset mix, strategy, and investment decisions.

Jordan holds a Bachelor of Commerce from the School of Business at the University of Victoria and is a CFA charterholder. Outside the office his two young boys keep him busy with various sports and activities. Having lived abroad Jordan enjoys travel and closer to home can be found cheering on the Blue Jays or working on his golf game.
