Richard Colton, CFA®, CIM®
Portfolio Manager
While Richard Colton spent plenty of time at his family’s auto repair business as a kid, he never mastered the finer points of auto mechanics. Instead, while his brother went on to become the family’s third-generation business owner, Richard took a different path and followed in his mother’s footsteps into a career in finance. Even though he didn’t join the family business, the values he learned there—integrity, trustworthiness, and hard work—have remained with him throughout his life and career.
“Growing up in the small community of Flesherton, I saw from a very young age that the reputation you established and being accountable to your clients mattered,” says Richard. “Our shared focus on maintaining the highest standards is what was immediately appealing about Newport Private Wealth. The firm’s investment alignment and focus on a client-first ethos fit perfectly with my own values.”
Always someone who enjoys taking on challenging tasks both professionally and personally, Richard pursued the CFA® designation early in his career because of its renowned difficulty and reputation as one of the highest standards of professionalism in the investment industry. His previous experience includes roles at CIBC, HSBC, and Manulife Financial. Most recently, he served as a Portfolio Manager and Senior Manager for a family-run asset management firm in Kingston. Mastering the complexities of wealth management and serving clients with dedication has been a highly rewarding journey.
That same love of challenge has led Richard to take on everything from home renovations to hockey and golf. Inspired by The Queen’s Gambit, which was filmed in part at his alma mater, St. Andrew’s College, he has immersed himself in chess and is also on a quest to achieve the perfect lawn. Richard and his wife live in Kingston with their two children.
Richard earned his Honours Bachelor of Arts in Economics from Queen’s University, where he was also a four-year member of the university golf team. He holds both the CFA® and CIM® designations and is an Associate Member of the Institute of Advanced Financial Planners, where he is a candidate for the Registered Financial Planner (RFP®) designation.
